Don’t let what happened to me happen to you.

We are on the road again and headed for Darwin. I want to share a story with you that will hopefully save you from what happened to me.

Will you ever be able to capture that image again, no, because nothing stays the same.

I have been backing up all my files, to an offsite drive, an onsite drive and to the cloud, I use Just Cloud.

Having been confident that all was successfully backed up we headed off. When I plugged in my external drove although there were all the folders on there they were all empty!!!

Oh no, I had seen the folders and assumed all the files had transferred successfully….NEVER assume anything!

Not to worry, I have a backup in the cloud, well I thought I did.

All my documents and other files were there, but no pictures, as a photographer this is the most important part. What had gone wrong. I tried uploading some new stuff to the cloud and discovered what had happened, you can only upload a certain size, so it had skipped all the larger files, 99% of my pictures, and still said the backup was complete. I have since found out, you can upload larger files, you just have to do it through drag and drop or manual backup.

If we had have had a fire or theft, this could have been a total disaster, however fortunately for me I do have another backup at home and one offsite.

It made me realize that no matter how much we backup we always need to double check that it has done so successfully.

If you don’t have a proper backup system, then you are in an even worse position.

I had previously tried to set up a backup system, but it always became too difficult to maintain. I have recently purchased an e-book that is a fantastic, easy to implement and maintain backup system. I am careful in what I recommend because I have been caught before, but this is worth every cent. It has enabled me to continue on our holiday knowing that all is still okay.

You can follow our journey to Darwin on the “video-blog” tab. We will be detouring from Tasmainia to capture this trip as it happens (and because I now don’t have the images with me to continue in Tasmania) and when we return home we will resume our trip in Tasmania.
