I hear lots of Photographer’s talking about the wonders of painting with light.
Did know all photographers are light painters?
That is what Photography is, painting with light.
How many times have you gone somewhere, taking a shot and then looked at other people shots of the area and thought mine doesn’t look anything like that?
Most of the time the only difference is the light.
I always encourage people when they see a scene that they like to take a photo straight away.
Because it gives them something to refer back to later.
Now you have that picture put your camera down, or at least turn it off.
Now I want you to walk around the object that you taking a photo of. If it’s a landscape you obviously can’t walk around it, so walk to the right, walk to the left. Crouch down low, find something high to stand on.
All I want you to look at is what the light is doing, where is the light falling where are the shadows.
As you begin to see the light you photography will reach a whole new level.
Okay now take another photo in the best position you can find, with the best light.
I want you to just sit and enjoy nature, or read a book for as long as you can and watch the light change.
Now do what you did before, walk around see what has changed. I would suggest you do this somewhere near to home or near your office, so you can visit a few times during the day and see the difference the light makes.
Look at it on different days, sunny days, cloudy days, rainy days, stormy days. The more you understand light and the way the type of day and time of day affect it, the better your photography will become.
Let me know how you get on.
